I am a big fan of creating my own panini at home. This is because I actually enjoy the process of putting my sandwiches together and cooking them. Best of all, there are lots of places to get inspiration from including cafes, sandwich shops, recipe books and websites. So thinking of what to make is not really a problem at all. Sometimes I simply buy a sandwich from a nearby store and then toast it when I get home. Then if it is one that I really enjoy, I add it to my list of favorites that I make myself.


The commercial sandwich makers that you see in delis and cafes today cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. But the good news for consumers all over the country is that we do not have to spend anywhere near this amount of money to get a high quality machine that will do all that we require. There are lots of different multi-function grills being sold by firms like Breville, Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach and George Foreman. However I personally am not all that interested in the extra features that these devices offer. All that I want is the ability to make my own panini.


Therefore the cheaper models are perfectly acceptable for my needs. I would suggest that if you are at all like me, simply looking for a high quality hot sandwich press, then you do not need to get one of the top of the range models that can be used as a griddle and has special fat draining channels for when you cook meats. Even if I did require this functionality, I would still have a dedicated panini press. This is because I simply do not like the idea of cooking bread on the same surface that I use to cook meats. I am not sure if this is a commonly held view, but to me it seems unhygienic.


My current favorite sandwich press is the Breville BSG520XL. This is because it has the exact features that I want in one of these devices and it comes at a very reasonable price. The things that I especially like about this machine include its flat bottom hot plate. This is nice because it guarantees that your hot sandwich will be heated completely. Secondly, the top plate is ribbed which causes the top of the panini to become marked with eye pleasing grill likes. The floating hinge design lets us make thick as well as thin sandwiches equally well.
